There are plenty of enjoyable holiday staycation ideas you can enjoy during the holiday season without traveling by plane. Whether you're staying close to home or just prefer to avoid air travel, here's a list of things you can consider.
Local Exploration:
Explore your own city or town as a tourist. There is always something “new” to discover in your own backyard. Visit museums, parks, and landmarks you haven't been to in a while. Some local, small museums have free admission or require a small donation, but they offer a wealth of historical information.
Nature Adventures:
Go hiking (number 1 on my list), camping, or have a picnic in nearby parks or nature reserves. Take a scenic drive through the countryside or along the coast.
Holiday Decorations:
Decorate your home or create a holiday light display. Take a drive through local neighborhoods known for their festive holiday decorations.
Holiday Markets and Festivals:
Attend local holiday markets, craft fairs, and winter festivals. These are guaranteed to get you into the holiday spirit! Support local small business crafters and purchase unique gifts. Also, join in community tree-lighting ceremonies and parades.
ACT3 Tip: Join your community recreation or neighborhood Facebook page to stay in the loop of all the events and activities happening in your area.
Winter Sports:
Try skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, or snowshoeing if you live in a snowy area.
Alternatively, try sandboarding or other warm-weather sports if you're in a sunny location. If you live in the Northern Virginia area, Massanutten Resort is one of my favorite ski resorts in Shenandoah.

Volunteer and Give Back:
Participate in a community service effort such as providing meals to families or volunteer at a local organization like a food kitchen. Donate to charities and help those in need during the holiday season.
Wine and Dine:
Experiment with holiday recipes and bake festive treats. Break away from the tv and tablet screens and get the kids involved. Host a potluck, cooking party, or an in-home wine tasting holiday party with friends and family.
Indoor Activities:
Stay in during those cool days and have a cozy movie night or game night at home. You can also visit the local theaters, museums, and art galleries.
DIY Crafts:
Put a special spin on your gifts this season and create your own handmade holiday gifts and decorations. Not sure where to start? Attend DIY workshops or craft classes in your area.
Local Getaways:
One of my favorite things to do is to take a short road trip to nearby cities or towns you've never explored. Book a staycation at a local hotel or resort for a change of scenery.
Relaxation and Self-Care:
Treat yourself to a spa day or wellness retreat. Bring your favorite self-care book and practice mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to de-stress.
Festive Dining:
Visit local immigrant restaurants that offer special holiday menus to experience a cultural cuisine. Host a holiday-themed dinner party with friends or family.
Holiday Music and Shows:
Attend local concerts, plays, or musical performances. Host a karaoke night or talent show with friends and family.
Cultural Exploration:
Explore cultural events, such as dance performances or art exhibitions. Learn about holiday traditions from different cultures in your area.
Home Improvement:
Use the time to work on home improvement projects or redecorate. Switch up the mood of your home by re-organizing and decluttering your living space.
Outdoor Adventures:
Go for long walks, bike rides, or birdwatching in nearby natural areas. Enjoy outdoor sports like tennis, golf, or fishing.
Family Time:
Spend quality time with family, playing board games or having a movie night.
Share stories, traditions, and reminisce with loved ones.
Photography and Memory-Making:
Capture the holiday season with photography or create a scrapbook. Document your local adventures and create lasting memories. The last Christmas Holiday I got to spend with my Grandmother was the most memorable for me. We sat in our hotel room at Longwood Gardens and crafted a mini holiday album and added photos from our trip.
Remember that the holidays can be a wonderful time to connect with loved ones, relax, and explore your local surroundings. No matter where you are, there are plenty of activities to enjoy without the need for air travel.
