Hiking 101: Essentials and Hiking Tips

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

Hiking is a great way to explore the outdoors and stay active. To my surprise many people aren't too familiar with hiking etiquette and are unsure of the basics of hiking. Here are some essentials and tips that I use and share with my participants during my Hike and Wine excursions, that will make your hiking experience more enjoyable and safe.

Plan your route and research the trail beforehand

There's nothing like arriving at a trail and not knowing the length of the route, the dynamics of the terrain, or even if there is a bathroom on site. Always do your research before you arrive at the trail. Some locations have poor cell service, therefore it's best to download the trail map from the park website or Alltrails is another great website.

Wear comfortable and appropriate clothing and footwear

I get this question all the time: What clothes and shoes should I wear? It honestly depends on the trail and the weather. A rule of thumb I usually follow for cool/cold weather is layer-up, because you peel off as you go. You would rather have more clothes on than needed, than not enough and become cold.

For flat terrain you can get away with wearing sneakers. My recommendation, if the terrain is rocky, muddy, and slippery, wear high-top hiking boots with grip. Also, watch each of your steps before you take them and think about where you want to place your foot, especially on very rocky paths, to avoid injuries. Hiking sticks come in handy when you’re unsure of the terrain and you’re worried about keeping your balance when stepping from one rock to the next.

Here is a list of recommend products I have used during my hikes:

What else to pack?

Pack enough water and snacks for the duration of your hike. If you know you're going to be out in the park for over an hour, it's wise to bring food that will sustain you such as granola or protein bars, a sandwich, and protein drinks.

Bring a map, compass, and/or GPS device because you never know how the cell reception will be. As part of the preparation planning, you want to have access to a map that doesn't require internet service. On the same line as safety, make sure you pack a basic portable, first aid kit.

It's beneficial to apply sunscreen and insect repellent during the warm, sunny months. Any topical spray, cream or oil with lemongrass as the main can be used as a bug repellant.

Respect Nature

Reminders:

Hike with a companion or let someone know your itinerary. It's always a great idea to send someone a pin drop of our location. If you don't feel comfortable walking alone, bring a friend with you. If you don't have any friends who like to hike, connect with us to find someone in the ACT3 Excursion Group to meet up with someone in the D.C., Maryland, Northern Virginia area.

Lastly, always listen to your body and take breaks as needed. You may not feel thirsty, but remember to take a swig of water to stay hydrated.
