Located on the western side of Mexico in Baja California, at the very bottom tip of the peninsula, the beautiful Los Cabos continues to grow into a relaxed version of Cancun. On a recent trip all the local people I met along the way were very kind and helpful, and they expressed to be how much Los Cabos changes from year to year. Los Cabos is very rich in Mexican culture, which is displayed in the handmade art and goods that can be bought from the local people. The mostly desert terrain and the beautiful water provides a great places for outdoor sport excursions. Add Los Cabos to your travel list and explore all it has to offer!

Weather & Packing

Mexico has two seasons: dry season (mid-October to April) and rainy season (May to mid-October). It does not rain everyday in the summer months, but the temperature can get to the mid-90 degrees, so I do suggest packing clothing with light, breathable fabrics. A hat with a wide brim will help protect you from the strong sun rays.

Accomodations

There are endless of beautiful hotels along the shore between the cities of San Lucas and San Jose. From the high-end resorts to the economical hotels, you can find what you need on Booking.com and Tripadvisor. Los Cabos is a growing area, with new hotels and resorts being built along the shoreline. One of the drivers told me if we returned next year around that time the area would look completely different, with much growth.

Travel Tip: Plan you trip outside of peak season, which will make a

difference in the travel costs: (February to May  & late September to early

    November).

Food

Of course you can eat the typical tacos and burritos, but try some of the local dishes like Chilaquiles at Mama’s Royal Cafe near the marina in Cabo San Lucas. There aren’t many vegan restaurants, but there are a few in the San Jose area. Chula Vegan Cafe is a great place to relax and enjoy authentic Mexican food, even if you aren’t a vegan.

Transportation: Getting Around

You can rent a car, but I recommend you book your reservations in advance online. TripAdvisor and Booking.com offer great deals. Taxis and Uber are also available. If you are traveling around the Marina and need to get from one end of the Marina to the other, you can take a water taxi for about $12. Be mindful, the drivers of the water taxis only accept cash.

Booking Outdoor Excursions

Book your excursion reservation(s) in advance on sites like Viator or Booking.com or at the concierge at your hotel.  I booked my snorkeling/boat tour on Viator because they offered great deals and I could read reviews of previous customers. TripAdvisor also have a great inventory of excursions at reasonable prices. Think about what you would like to experience, such as snorkeling, ATV driving, zipline, or sightseeing on a boat cruise. If you don’t have any excursions in mind, click on the link below to read more about available excursions in Los Cabos.

Check with your hotel concierge for excursion packages and discounts too. Sometimes hotels have connections with the local companies and can provide deals you may not find online.

! TIP: Around the tourist areas, such as at San Lucas Marina and at the airport, there are many local people trying to sell you excursions and other items. Avoid buying any excursions from them because they will overcharge you.

Local Attractions

In addition to the excursions, there are areas in Los Cabos that are “Must Visit”.

Central San Jose Del Cabo

On  Thursdays the Art Walk is a live attraction that features locals’ handmade art and goods. Performances of music and dancing can be viewed in the Plaza Mijares. You can buy affordable and authentic souvenirs and enjoy tasty food.

Marina Puerta Los Cabo

Plan a day at the Marina. You can’t leave Los Cabos without taking a boat ride to see the famous El Arco, “the Arch”, an arch-shaped rock. Playa del Divorcio, “Divorce Beach” and Playa del los Amantas, “Lovers Beach”, are both highlights you must see while on your boat tour. There are plenty of restaurants and bars around the Marina where you can enjoy your favorite Mexican dish.

Safety

Based on what I was told by all the local people I spoke with, Los Cabos is a safe place for visitors. My friend and I traveled around either by Uber or the truck the excursion provided us and pretty much all the Uber drivers were nice and accommodating. Even though we felt safe, make sure you still stay aware of your surroundings. The Marina is packed with local vendors, people trying to sell you a variety of  items. Don’t get tricked in overpaying for items for excursions just to stop them from bothering you. You can just say “No” or ignore them, and keep on walking. Overall, we felt comfortable traveling by Uber at night to the local restaurant or walking around our resort at night.

I did notice all the resorts had gated entrances, armed security at the front, and/or a toll booth to check-in visitors. That was pretty comforting to know the resort accounted for everyone that entered the property.
