Are you ready to plan your getaway to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley? Getaways don't always have to consist of flying to a luxurious island or spending a week away on a cruise ship. It can look like a 2 hour car ride to the countryside, reconnecting with yourself and finding peace in the simplicity of nature. The company Getaway has created an unique experience to do just that. With tiny cabins scattered around the U.S. no more than 2 hours outside of major cities, you can drive to an outpost to getaway. Save this post to help with ideas of what things to do for a weekend getaway to Shenandoah.

Day 1:

Depending on where you are driving from in the Washington D.C. tri-state area (DMV), it only takes about 2 hours to drive to the Getaway House outpost in Stanardsville, VA.

Vineyards

Before you nestle into your cabin, bring a bottle of wine to enjoy at your cabin from one or all three of these wineries on the way:

Tip: Check each vineyards' websites in advance for holiday closures!

Getaway House

No need to overpack because Getaway House has you covered with a variety of items already available within and around the cabin. Honestly, I was blown away by how clean and cute this tiny cabin is. The cabin is free of wifi service and spotty cell phone reception: the perfect setup for a peaceful environment.

After your short tour around your cabin, start your campfire before the sunsets. Once you have your fire going, sit back and relax while you make s'mores.

Day 2:

The Getaway outpost is in close proximity to the main attractions in the Shenandoah Valley area where you can enjoy wineries, hiking, winter sports, and local foods. Each of the listed places on this itinerary can take up your entire day. Therefore, if you plan to stay a third day, I recommend saving one of these attractions for the next day.

Shenandoah National Park

Take a scenic hike along the South River Falls Trail or just drive from overlook to overlook gazing at the rural horizon on the Appalachian mountains.

  • Distance from outpost: 10 miles

  • Time: 15 minutes

  • Entrance fee: $30 per car

  • For more information about the park click here.

  • Call 540-999-3500 for up to date information on the Park Closure status

Massanutten Resort

An expansive resort of year-round activities, shops, dining, and lodging. You can enjoy an indoor waterpark and recreational activities, golfing, snow sports, summer festivals, and much more. You can literally spend the whole day at the resort with the endless activities they have available.

  • Distance from outpost: 24 miles

  • Time: 33 minutes

  • Entrance fee: no entrance fee (cost depends on the selected activity

Day 3:

Sadly, it's time to pack up and head home. Start your morning with yoga in the fresh air or take a walk on the onsite trail.

If you have time to spare on your way home and did not have the chance to visit one of the listed attractions on Day 2, spend this day visiting Shenandoah park or a winery.
