Consumed with nature parks, Kentucky is the outdoor adventure seeker’s backyard. Did you know there are 6 major National Parks in Kentucky? Within each park there are hidden gems and amazing trails waiting to be explored. On my most recent trip to the southern area of Kentucky, I learned from one of the locals, there are numerous hiking trails and waterfalls that have not been documented by the Parks & Recreation Department. Even many of the local people had no clue that there were waterfalls that exist, but have not been pinged on Google Maps. If you have not marked Kentucky off on your list yet, I highly recommend you consider visiting this beautiful land on your next adventure.

Waterfalls

If you are looking to chase waterfalls, Kentucky has over 800 recorded waterfalls within its state and national parks. During my first trip to Kentucky, I visited Cumberland Falls State Park while camping five miles east at Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort for a couple of days. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, Cumberland Falls State Park has their camping resort with on-site amenities, and outdoor activities that include horseback riding and endless hiking trails.

Eagle Falls trail allows you to view two beautiful waterfalls in one trip: Cumberland Falls and Eagle Falls. Near the beginning of the trail you can get a clear view of Eagles Falls. Actually the falls can be viewed at different vantage points around the parks. When you arrive at the end of the trail, you will be in close proximity to Cumberland Falls. You will be so close, you can feel the mist that exudes from the waterfall, which will be a nice feeling after the intense hike. I recommend packing a lunch, because there is nothing like eating lunch while watching the waterfall.

Outdoor Activities

Hiking

The southern region of Kentucky is made up of a cluster of natural state and national parks: Cumberland Falls State Park, Daniel Boone National Forest, and Big South Fork National Park. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking to see a beautiful waterfall, there are trails for all levels. Here are a couple of sites to check out more information about the trails:

KAYAKING

Kayaking on the Cumberland River is the most relaxing outdoor activity I have ever done. This river is very calm and smooth. You can bring your own equipment or through the Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort, they provide the kayak, the paddle, and life jacket.

OTHER AVAILABLE ACTIVITIES

All the activities at Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort must be purchased and reserved in advance.

  1. Cumberland Star Riverboat Cruise

  2. Whitewater Rafting

  3. Canoeing

  4. Stand Up Paddleboarding

Travel Tip: Plan you trip outside of peak season, which will make a

difference in the travel costs: (February to May  & late September to early

November). Also, rates are usually cheaper on the weekdays.

Where to Stay

Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort took be back to my Girl Scout Camping days. My adventure partner and I rented their Cozy Cabin . The cabin includes a set of bunk beds and one full size bed, a mini refrigerator, and a microwave. There was a ceiling fan inside the cabin and one outside above the porch area. The space has a place to park your car, and it comes with a grill,  a fire pit with a grill iron, a picnic table. Honestly, didn’t have much of expectation before arriving, but the cabin was clean and comfy.

! TIP: Bring your own cleaning supplies and bed sheet set!
